Skyrim Review

Post by Tryhard on Mon 09 Dec 2013, 19:11

Skyrim is one of my favourite games of all time. I play it nearly everyday and it does not cease to amuse me. It is buggy, but to me, those little errors are just charming. I love it when I fast-travel to some location and suddenly a mammoth spawns in mid air and dies after it falls down. Many were moaning about how Skyrim can't keep up with its predecessor. Are they right? Let us find out!

Before we take a closer look at the skills and class-system, the possibilities or the character cutomization and abilities, I will sum up the story and the first part of the game.

You are the last of the Dragonborn. Warriors with dragonblood flowing through their veins. The Dragonborn or Dovahkiin is the only living creature able to effectively and permanentely kill dragons and use their souls to learn dragonshouts like Firebreath or Unrelenting Force, which flings enemies into space. Alduin, the first son of Akatosh, one of the Nine Divines, was banished by the ancient nords and was cursed to be lost in time. But their plan failed and Alduin got send forward in the Fourth Era, where the story of the game is playing. He naturally proceeds to kill everything he comes across, which actually works in your favour. Skyrim starts off with you, a thief and a Stormcloak named Ralof talking about the civil war on a transport of prisoners. You got caught alongside other Stormcloak soldiers during an ambush of the Empire to catch Ulfric Stormcloak, the leader of the rebels, who are fighting the Empire and Thalmor( aka High Elfs) and try to claim Skyrim for the Nords again. The Imperials are bringing you to Helgen. As you get out of the wagon you were held prisoner in, you get asked who you are. Now you get to customize your character, but we will get to that later and more in-depth. The commander decides to kill you, even though she doesn't know who you are exactly, she decides to kill you anyways. "Mmmhh, he/she could be a general or even a king/queen of another country....fuck it, let's behead this nitwit.". Now Alduin comes in. You are kneeling down in front of the executioners block, the executioner is taking a swing when suddenly; HOLY SHIT ALDUIN! You use the commotion to escape and fight your way through waves of soldiers trying to stop you from getting in safety. Finally, you get out of Helgen and now the adventure begins! You can follow Ralof or Hadvar, an imperial soldier, to Riverwood and get into the main questline ooor you could just walk off and explore without touching any questlines whatsoever.

Now that this is out of the way, we can look at the character customization!

You can choose to be a Nord, Wood Elf, High Elf( or Thalmor), Redguard, Orc, Khajiit, Imperial, Dark Elf, Argonian or a Bretone.

You also are able to customize everything from your characters  weight and gender to how much dirt is in his face(im not even kidding). Each race brings a special ability along. For example; Nords have 50% frost-resistance, Dark Elfs can summon a ring of fire around them once a day and Argonians can breath underwater, which is the best thing since woopidy-fucking-doo-da.
The race you choose to play as even effects how NPC's talk to you or if they like or hate you. For example: You are a Dark Elf, a race which is frowned upon and hated by the Stormcloakes, and you are in Windhelm, the main province of the rebellion. You will get insulted and most people will express their hate towards you. Another rather cool addition is that your ingame race influences your skills as well. Redguards are the best warriors, so their fighting skill have a higher level by default. High Elfs are brilliant mages, so their magical skills have a higher level by default. That doesn't mean you have to play as a mage when you are a High Elf, it only means your magical abilities are a bit higher than the ones of the other races. The skill level difference doesn't matter in the later game.

There are 3 groups in which you can split up the 18 skill-trees Skyrim offers you; Thief(Stealth), Warrior(Combat), Mage(Magic).

The skills alocated to this group are Alchemy, Light Armor, Lockpicking, Pickpocket, Sneak and Speech.

The skills alocated to this group are Archery, Block, Heavy Armor, One-Handed, Two-Handed and Smithing.

The skills alocated to this group are Alteration, Conjuration, Destrucion, illusion, Restoration and Enchanting.

Each skill determines how well various tasks can be performed. As skills are used, their level increases, which increases your characters overall level. This means, that you don't have to waste a precious skillpoint to actually perform one of the skills. You can do everything from scratch. As you progress through the skill-levels, you get new perks. Perks are a new addition to the Elder Scrolls series. I find most of them pretty useless to be honest, but some are just plain awesome. There is the generic "This increases damage by 10%" or " You are 15% harder to spot while crouching", but there also is "You now have a chance to behead an enemy when you use a heavy attack while standing still". For every awesome perk there are 5 generic and boring ones. This does not matter. To me atleast. I find the new perks to be a cool addition and the skill system is complex, but reaaaally varied and fun to dig through.

Though graphics do not matter to me, I'll show you some screenshots.

I took this screenshot in Riften while investigating.

Well, shit.

This looks like out of a trailer, doesn't it? :p Actually taken during a mission in Falkreath.

Just a cool shot from a cave infested by vampires.^^

The most important part of any game is obviously the gameplay though. Many developers try to make their games replayable, varied and all in all; a huge load of fun *cough* except EA and DICE *cough* . An awful lot fail, but Bethesda hit the Bullseye. Skyrim is the game I find myself revisiting the most out of all of my games. The controls are good. The fighting, oh the fighting, it is boring as fuck, if you choose to be a warrior. Skyrim turns into a button-masher and you loose motivation quite fast. However, playing as a mage or thief or heavy armor assassin, who conjures fire-demons and mixes potions after he married a Dark Elf is reaaally amusing. Again, referring to the freedom of choice. As I've mentioned before Bugthesda kind of screwed up fixing all of the bugs Skyrim has. When I played the Dragonborn DLC, I had to learn a shout, but had no dragonsouls to do so. Logically, I went on to smack the living hell out of the next dragon I saw. To my suprise, Miraak, the main villian of the Dragonborn DLC, steals the soul like

I then realised, after going badshit crazy and completely eradicating every dragon I came across, I was at a point in the story, where this nitwit steals every soul I could get. I had to start the DLC aaaalll over again, because my savefile was fucked...

Because Bethesda didn't gain enough money off of Skyrim, they released 3 DLC; Dragonborn, Hearthfire and Dawnguard

In Dragonborn an old Dovahkin rises and enslaves nearly every citizen of Solstheim with the help of the daedric god Hermaeus Mora. New armor, quests, spells, weaponry and shouts await you. You even can ride dragons!

In Hearthfire you can build your own house in Falkreath, Morthal and Dawnstar. Have your own library or garden. Adopt a child or turn your house into a forge.

In Dawnguard the vampires are getting more and more aggressive and the Dawnguard, an ancient group of vamipre-hunters, is reassembling. Save the world and discover things, no human, elf or orc has seen in centuries.

All in all the DLC's bring a nice amount of new gameplay with them and add exciting new things to an already really good game.^^

Skyrim is huge in scale, offers a fuckload of sidequests, epic music, appealing graphics, sometimes mindnumbing, but mostly fun gameplay and actually well made DLC's. I know the graphics can't keep up with the expectations and sometimes look muddy and quite crappy, but most of the time they look really nice. The often long walks from quest to quest might get exhausting, but you stumble upon so much random stuff, that the journey will always keep you observant and full of anticipation of what will happen next. You always have something to do; reaching from saving the world to cleaning up those messy chests you keep your stuff in. The skill system is well thought-through and the idea, that there are no classes you have to choose from the beginning is something I adore.

+long                                                                                                              - many bugs and glitches
+great replayability                                                                                       - pretty generic story
+variety in skills, armor and weaponry
+gorgeous scenery
+epic music
+always stuff to do

My Advice: If you are into offline RPG's, you should buy Skyrim.

Nice review man Laughing
Got the same thoughts, except I don't play it that much anymore after I finished + the graphics could've been better. Nonetheless, fun game Laughing

Effort well put I should say mon <3

Well described review, with your own thoughts and all. One thing that made me interested in this game from your review was that you describe the bugs as charming, reminds me of GTA San Andreas with it's easter eggs and funny bugs :DWe love those kind of bugs, don't we? :333

Maybe Ill download (and if I love it, buy) Skyrim during the christmas holidays. Wish I had more time to play PC games nowdays Sad

Does one have to play all the other Elder Scrolls games to have fun with this game? And meh, who needs top graphics when one have awesome gameplay? Laughing) <3

Well, Morrowind was a brilliant game, so, if you want to get an epic Elder Scrolls experience, you should get it :>
